2006
BEHAVIOUR OF GLUFOSINATE ANDGLYPHOSATE IN COMMONRAGWEED:APPARENT PARADOXAND SURPRISES We examined the foliar epidermis of commonragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) plants and studied the behaviour of the herbicides glufosinate and glyphosate in this species. Both leaf surfaces exhibited 3 types of trichomes, according to their size and shape. Epicuticular waxes appeared amorphous, which may explain high levels of spray retention. Glufosinate and glyphosate were rapidly and almost completely taken up by common ragweed leaves; half maximum uptake was nearly reached after 5 and 3 h, respectively. The longest trichomes were stained with AgN03, indicating the presence of hydrophilic domains, wh…

Water content of latent fingerprints - Dispelling the myth.
2016
Abstract Changing procedures in the handling of rare and precious documents in museums and elsewhere, based on assumptions about constituents of latent fingerprints, have led the author to an examination of available data. These changes appear to have been triggered by one paper using general biological data regarding eccrine sweat production to infer that deposited fingerprints are mostly water. Searching the fingerprint literature has revealed a number of reference works similarly quoting figures for average water content of deposited fingerprints of 98% or more. Whilst accurate estimation is difficult there is no evidence that the residue on fingers could be anything like 98% water, even…
Biological Basis of the HLA-B8,DR3-Associated Progression of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
1998
The factors influencing the evolution of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are not fully known, but the host genotype undoubtedly plays a role in determining the outcome of the disease by affecting the immune response to HIV. The role of the host human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotype in the regulation of susceptibility to HIV infection and expression has been studied extensively in different major risk groups. Certain HLA alleles and haplotypes, being associated with aberrant immune responses independently from HIV infection, have been reported to facilitate the rapid progression of disorders related to HIV infection. Particularly, the association of rapid acquired immunodeficie…
Combining Benford's Law and machine learning to detect money laundering. An actual Spanish court case.
2017
Abstract Objectives This paper is based on the analysis of the database of operations from a macro-case on money laundering orchestrated between a core company and a group of its suppliers, 26 of which had already been identified by the police as fraudulent companies. In the face of a well-founded suspicion that more companies have perpetrated criminal acts and in order to make better use of what are very limited police resources, we aim to construct a tool to detect money laundering criminals. Methods We combine Benford’s Law and machine learning algorithms (logistic regression, decision trees, neural networks, and random forests) to find patterns of money laundering criminals in the conte…
Age-dependent shift-to-the-right in the localization of colorectal adenomas.
1987
The age-dependent prevalence and topographical distribution of colorectal adenomas was investigated in 1006 unselected autopsies (554 males and 452 females) in Mainz, FRG. In 200 out of 1006 autopsies (19.8%) a total of 498 adenomas of the large intestine were detected. The percentage of patients with adenomas increased continuously with age. Only 6% of all adenomas were localized in the caecum and 8% in the rectum, whereas all the other adenomas were distributed rather evenly throughout the ascending colon (23%), the transverse colon (25%), the descending colon (15%) and the sigmoid colon (23%). Analyzing the topographical distribution of adenomas for definite age groups (40-59, 60-69, 70-…
Myxoid lipoadenorna of the parathyroid gland
1980
A myxoid lipoadenoma of the parathyroid gland causing primary hyperparathyroidism is reported. The very rare and histologically unusual tumor consists of an epithelial component which is combined with a stromal component in a characteristic way. Slender, irregularly branched trabeculae which mainly consist of chief cells as well as a few oxyphil cells are found as epithelial component. The predominantly myxomatous and only focally lipomatous stromal component is interpreted as an integrated tumor component of the lipoadenoma which is derived from the parathyroid adipose tissue.
Epithelial markers and differentiation in adnexal neoplasms of the skin: an immunohistochemical study including individual cytokeratins
1995
Applying immunohistochemical procedures for the detection of eight different cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and other differentiation markers, we compared the staining patterns of normal cutaneous structures with those of benign adnexal tumors (n = 65). Syringomas exhibited a marker pattern highly reminiscent of that seen in normal dermal eccrine ducts (EMA in peripheral cells, CK 10 in intermediate cells, and CK 6, CK 19, and CEA in luminal cells). Nodular hidradenomas exhibited complex patterns suggesting relationship between tumor cells, including clear cells, and normal secretory coil cells (CK 7, CK 8, CK 19, and EMA); however, dermal-duct and epidermoid differentiation were also detect…
